About 16,000 years ago, the people living on the Japanese Archipelago started to make pottery, which marks the beginning of the Jomon period during which pottery was used. The Jomon people made not only pottery but also started to make figurines of themselves by firing clay in the later period. They are all female clay figures with breasts. They are referred to as dogu.

There are different types of clay figurines, including those with braided hair and bobbed hair. By looking at these various clay figurines, we can imagine the shape of their face, hairstyles, clothing and ornaments.
