2 (top, p. 177):
A clay object excavated from a grave pit, which looks like a death mask. There are no other unearthed artifacts similar to this dated to the first half of the Jomon period.

3 (bottom, p. 177):
These are seven of the 19 pieces of clay masks that were excavated from one site. They are smaller than a bean-jam bun, and there might have been a group of people who wore clay masks on their foreheads.

4(right, small pic., p. 177):
This clay figurine can tell us how the Jomon people may have looked wearing a mask.
