Not only are the designs elaborate, these ornamental projections have a sculpture-like feel that would appear to be too cumbersome for cooking.

Nevertheless, it is apparent they had practical uses, as some with traces of scorched rice have been excavated.

In order to minimize water leakage, all pottery pieces first had their inner surface smoothed with objects such as shells and round stones, then were fired.
