1 (large and small pics., pp. 46-47):
An amusing clay object. When laid on the floor, the beak projects up and the rear part looks like webbed feet, which suggests a waterfowl. But it also looks like a sea animal when upright.

Using the techniques of decorating pottery of its time period, this is a masterpiece of an animal clay figurine, for its size, design and the techniques applied to this piece.

Although there are holes in the back and the abdomen areas, it does not function as a musical instrument.

2 (small pic., top, p. 47):
There is an excavated clay object in Chiba prefecture that is similar to the piece above.
