It is unknown whether the Jomon people intentionally gave clay figurines facial expressions. However, there are pieces introduced here with expressions of emotion that appear to be conveying the feelings of the Jomon people.

1 (top, p. 170):
This is a stone figurine.

2 (bottom left, p. 170):
There are tattoos on the cheeks. All of these clay figurines, including those wearing large earrings (No. 5: top left, p. 171) as well as a choker-like ornament (No. 6: top right, p. 171) have smiling expressions
